Write a review for a play that you attended this semester

Recently I attended Waller hall theater performance “The Servant of Two Masters”. This is a comic play about a servant who decides to serve two masters Beatrice, and Florindo. The beginning of this play started off a little slow, but as the play progress the more interesting it got. The twist in this play is that the servant between these two masters is that they are lovers looking for each other. Beatrice fools her servant and the other characters by disguising as her lover Florindo to try find out where he is located. Unknowingly that he is at the same castle she is at, but they keep missing each other. How the two lovers find each other is when Truffaldino mixes up their clothing, Beatrice’s ends up with Florindo’s notebook and Florindo ends up with Beatrice’s picture of himself that he gave to her.

Whenever they discovered these items’ Truffaldino lied to each one of his masters saying that they had died in a tragic incident. Hearing Truffaldino’s stories about their lover Beatrice and Florindo decide to hang themselves because they didn’t see the point of living if the love of their life was dead. Beatrice and Florindo almost came through of killing themselves until the two waiters from the kitchen stopped them. During all of this commotion Beatrice and Florindo end up seeing each other and realizing that each one of them was alive.

The servant decides to lie to each of these masters to get double of everything he needs such as money and food, and also to try to get out of trouble from the mistakes he had done. What makes this play so comical is how Truffaldino tries to serve his two masters, he mixes up their mail, and also he starts to mix up orders that he was assigned to do. What makes this play such a little romantic is that some of the characters fall in love with each other; Clarice and Silvio, Smeraldina and Truffaldino, and Florindo and Beatrice. The style of this play is from the mid-15 century in Italy. Overall the play was turned out to be a really good show. In “The Servant of Two Masters” there were a few things that stuck out to me; the acting, costumes, and the transition and lighting.

The acting in this play was amazing and really amusing. Sean Barett played “Truffaldino” and he was really amusing to watch. His part was played as a jokingly servant. Sean played his part very well he didn’t over exaggerate his part, but, he expressed his inner role to show us the character of the servant. Although he took much of the attention, when it was his turn to share the spotlight, he had no problem to step back. Every one of the actors played their part very well and understood the meaning and the theme of the script. Natalie Palmides, played the part of Smeraldina, didn’t have a main role in the play but she also played her part really well. Her character Smeraldina was a maid that loved flirting with men, and also was a little jealous of her master Clarice because she was in love with a handsome man named Silvio. Natalie expressed her love for men and attention very well and also was full of energy. The entire cast played out this romantic comedy really well.

The costumes that the actors wore really went with the play. Not only the clothes, but the masks the actors wore, really caught my attention. Many of the characters wore half masks with exaggerated features, each masked character developed a defined physicality, way of walking, set of gestures, and personality traits. The transition and lighting were really fascinating to me because even though this isn’t the main focus of the play, but it is the one of the most important. When the scene was set on being in the castle the lighting was brighter and shined throughout the whole stage to show the affect that we were all inside the castle with the characters. When the scene was set outside in the town the light was a slight dimmer and more focused on the middle of the stage instead of the whole stage.

The Theater by the grove, Waller hall theater performance is set in the oak grove beside the Stapleton library. I think that this theater isn’t that great looking, but I think it is a good place for students, faculty, staff, and people from the community to go and enjoy a play. The cost of the show was $14 for adults and $8 with an I-card for students. The audience needed no extra help to understand and to get in the mood for the play, which made the play way more interesting, amusing and exciting to watch.
