Design Lighting for a play

I decided to design a lighting scene from The Lion. Whenever Nala and Simba are reunited after they are all grown up from Simba running away from the kingdom. Whenever Nala and Simba are reunited they are close to each other telling each other that they miss each other. For the lighting behind Nala and Simba I decided to use a orange spotlight and a yellow spotlight to make the scene act like it’s the evening of the day. For my next lighting of this scene Tomon starts singing about How Nala and Simba are falling in love. Whenever Timone says “They’ll Fall in love and here’s the bottom line” I’ll have the lights turn to a red spotlight to make the scenery turn into a love, romantic scenery. Timon then keeps singing and says the “There’s magic everywhere” the lights will turn dim and white sparkled lights will start sparkling throughout the stage.

He then says “Disaster’s in the air” the lights will turn black and the white lights will come on again but now it will look like lightening is striking to make a disaster affect. Whenever Nala and Simba are playing around and flirting by the river the lights will turn into a light blue lighting to show a water scene affect. When Nala and Simba are playing around in the grass the spotlights will turn green to have to scene look like there in grass and in the forest. At the end of this scene whenever Nala and Simba are gazing into each other’s eyes the lights will turn Light blue and Purple to have the scene like the sky is turning into a night sky. Throughout the scene there will be a spotlight showing first to Timone and Pumbaa whenever they first start singing. whenever the orchestra starts playing the spotlight will start to follow Simba and Nala until the end of the scene when Timone and Pumbaa finish out the song.

Broadway

Broadway shows are shown every around the U.S. A few shows that are playing that I researched is “Wicked” which is showing in Boston Massachusetts at the Boston Opera House. The tickets for “Wicked” vary depending where you sit. A Balcony seat ticket costs $91, the balcony seats Left and right cost 94$. Sitting at the MEZZ seats cost either $121 or$158, and sitting at the ORCH the prices are $183, $184, and $194. Another popular Broadway that is showing is “Jersey Boys”. The show is playing a Bass Concert Hall in Austin, Texas. The Balcony tickets Cost $100, Orchestra seats cost $137, $147, $152. . One of the Broadway shows I would love to go and see on stage is Legally Blonde. The movie “Legally Blonde” was really good, so I love to see how the characters would perform on stage. Seeing this on Broadway I would see it as a different perspective, because in the movie the characters don’t sing but on stage the characters sing. I think I ever went to go see Legally Blonde on Broadway I would feel like I could get a better understanding of the characters because I would be seeing them live.

The stars that play in "Legally Blonde” are Becky Gulsvig who plays the main character as Elle Woods, D.B. Bonds who plays as Emmett; Elle Woods new boyfriend. Natalie Joy Johnson plays Paullette; is Elle Woods’s new friend at college, who also does manicures for Elle. Michael Rupert as Professor Callahan; Professor Callahan was Elle Woods teacher who later we find out that he has a crush on her and pulls a move on her that made her feel uncomfortable. Jeff Mclean as Warner Huntington III; Warner is Elle Woods Ex- Boyfriend who dumps her for a so call “Smarter Girl”. Warner is the reason why Elle Woods decides to go to Law School. Elle thinks if she gets accepted into Harvard Warner will think she is smart enough for him and he will take her back.

Megan Lewis Plays Vivienne; Vivienne is Warner’s new fiancé, who secretly is jealous of Elle Woods. Vivienne tries with all her might to ruin Elle’s experience at Harvard. Coleen Sexton plays as Brooke; Brooke is a famous work-out instructor who is accused of killing her husband. Elle Woods as an internship is Brookes lawyer to prove that Brooke is guilty of the falsely accused murder. The other actors that star in this Broadway show is Tiffany Engen, Rhiannon Hansen, Lucia Spina, Candice Marie Wood, Barry Anderson, Sara Andreas, Kyle Brown, Liberty Cogen, Ven Daniel, Brooke Leigh Engen, Spencer Howard, Paul Jackel, Jason Kappus, Ashley Moniz, Kathleen Elizabeth Monteleone, Brian Patrick Murphy, Cjay Hardy Philip, Jonathan Rayson, Constantine Rousouli, Sara Sheperd, and Josh Walden. The director of the Broadway musical is Jerry Mitchell; Jerry Mitchell also choreographed “Legally Blonde” The Composer and Lyricist of Legally Blonde Nell Benjamin and Laurence O’Keefe. The next “Legally Blonde” Broadway show that is showing is in Cincinnati, Oh and the ticket pricing ranges from $58 to $156.

Several Broadway shows that have been running the longest is “Phantom of the Opera” first opening show was January 25, 1988 and it still runs to this day. “Phantom of the Opera” has shown 7,767 times. Another long running Broadway shows “Beauty and the Beast” opened April 18, 1994 and has shown about n5, 093. Rent opened April 29, 1996 and has shown about 4,315 shows. Chicago opened November 14, 1996 and has performed about 4,093 shows. And another Broadway show that has been showing the longest is the “Lion king” it opened November 13, 1997 and has show about 3,676 shows. “The Lion King” I actually went to go see when I was in middle school in Canada. Seeing this Broadway was so amazing with the costumes, and the scenery. Seeing the flying puppets that kind of came out to the audience really made the full affect that were actually in the safari with Simba.

“Cats” was also another Long- Running show but it came to a closed September 10, 2000. The reason behind this Broadway show closing is that even though “Cats” was a hit whenever it first showed (October 23, 1982) sadly came from a full audience to half audiences. “Cats” has won a few special awards. For Olivier Awards In 1981 Best New Musical also “Outstanding Achievement of the Year in Musicals”, For Tony Awards in 1983 “Cats” has received Best Musical, Best Book of a Musical, Best original Score, Best Featured Actress- Betty Buckley, Best Costume Design, Best Lighting Design, and last but not least Best Direction. Another long-running Broadway show that closes is “Les Miserables”. “Les Miserables” The musical ran at thebroad way theater through October 10, 1990, when it moved to theImperial Theater. It was scheduled to close on March 15, 2003, but the closing was postponed by a surge in public interest. Only three years after the original run closed, Les Miserables began a limited return to Broadway on November 9, 2006 at the Broadhurst Theater. On December 19, 2006, it was announced that Les Miserables would extend its run until September 1, 2007. It was subsequently announced that the show would have an open-ended run rather than a set closing date. “Les Miserables has won a few Tony awards in 1987 Best musical, best book of a Musical, Best original Score, Best Performance by a featured Actor in a Musical, Best Performance by a Featured Actress in a Musical, Best Costume Design, Best Lighting Design, and lastly Best Direction of a Musical.

Going to a Broadway can be really interesting and fascinating especially your first time going. Researching some of these Broadway’s are really interesting and I think at least one time in a persons’ life they have to go to a Broad way show because it is a great experience.

The playwright I decided to research is Tyler Perry. Tyler Perry is a writer, actor, producer, and directory. What makes Tyler Perry so inspiring to me is that he grew up having a really hard life. Perry’s father was a cruel man, in his logic to get an answer is to beat it out of you, and that’s what Perry’s father did to him throughout his childhood. “I always thought I was going to die before I grew up” said Tyler Perry. I honestly couldn’t image what he went through as a child. Not only was Perry physically abused, at age 10 his mother’s friend seduced him, also being molested by his own father. After facing all of these horrifying moments in his life at a young age Perry dropped out of high school and tried committing suicide by slitting his wrists. Thank fully the suicide attempt was a fail; Perry began to realize that he can escape his abusive family and start over a new, happy life. At age 16 Perry changed his name from Emmitt Perry Jr. to Tyler Perry. The reason behind changing his name is that he didn’t want to use his father’s name. Also he decided to go back and earn his GED and then became a carpenter’s apprentice.
Tyler Perry inspires me greatly, because he literally defines the meaning from “Rag to Riches”. The Oprah show was Tyler Perry’s first inspiration to start off his career whenever Oprah Stated “that writing down one's experiences could be cathartic”. The word cathartic, in other word means “he told the People” hearing Oprah’s insightful words gave Perry his Idea for his first production “I Know I Have Changed” in 1990. From his first production on Perry’s productions have sky rocketed. What also makes Perry’s productions show inspiring to watch his that his movies, plays, and skits are all based on real lives. For Example “Diary of a Mad Black Women” was a play and a movie, which he shows his audience, that women in abusive relationship that they aren’t alone, they can go out and seek help. Also that woman doesn’t need to stay with that man because he is rich, or if they are afraid of being alone.
What makes Tyler Perry so admirable is that he isn’t afraid to speak the truth in his plays. He isn’t afraid to tell the world about his childhood, it’s painful to read and also listen to what happened to him as a child but also for people who are going to through what he went through, they can see that they can escape away from that life and go out and accomplish amazing things. He also speaks the truth in his plays. Every play he writes he sends out a secret life message.
“Diary of a Mad Black Women” is one of his productions that I can really relate my life to. I had a couple relationships in my best where I was both physically and emotionally abused. Watching his theatre production really showed me that I shouldn’t be afraid to stand up for myself, that I am my own person, and that there are other men out there who will treat me like a princess not like a slave. Also this play showed me that I shouldn’t be afraid to discuss this problem to my friends, family, or whoever I can trust.
What also inspires me about Tyler Perry not only about his life, but, also in his theatre production. All of his plays on stage our musicals. I think musicals are harder than a regular play because for a musical actor they have to focus on everything that a normal actor focuses on but also their singing. The musical actors can’t sing to low or else the audience can’t hear them, or to loud because the audience wouldn’t be able to hear what they are singing. I liked that Perry presents his script first on stage before he produces it into a movie. Perry’s characters are all inspiring and also so hilarious especially the main character in all of his plays Madea.
Madea is the character that everyone loves to watch, but at the same time is scared to encounter her bad side. Madea’s real name is Mabel Simmons; she is an aggressive, grey-haired, bespectacled black matriarch. She will argue with anyone, frequently threatens people by pulling a gun out of her purse. She also isn’t afraid to run from the cops, but at the same time she is the character that everyone goes to for problem. Like in the play “Diary of a Mad Black Women” Helen, played by Kimberley Elise, stays with Madea for comfort. By the climax of the play Madea had motivated Helen to go back to her husbands’ house take back her belongings and show him who the better person is.
Reading about Tyler Perry’s life has taught me that no matter how hard life get’s I can still accomplish my goals and become successful. Also I am my own person no one owns me, no one directs my path in life or tells me what to do.

Relate Theatre To My Life

Although this was an online class and therefore never attended a lecture I have still gained an appreciation for theater. I have learned to gain an appreciation for those who work in the fine arts such as film. I learned that it is extremely difficult to write a script and make everything work together in sequence. I appreciate how difficult it is for actors to keep both the audience entertained and also using the right tone of voice when rehearsing.

Living in the digital age theater plays its role in everyday society for example music. You cannot turn on the television without hearing it. Me for example I always have my IPod with me and it has become a part of my everyday life that I have it on me whether I am working out or doing homework for class. Living in the digital age we as of me forget about live theater. Going to see a live theater at Broadway would be an incredible experience as you get to hear the actors in their actual voices and see their true feelings on stage.

I have also learned about role playing in society for example as an employee at Papa John’s I have to teach myself to be courteous and polite to customers. I also become a role in my life as a daughter and I can usually be myself unlike my workplace. Although I would rather be more independent like I am here at IUP but I know I can’t since I would not want to do anything that would disappoint them. I also play the role of a sorority sister in which I act like a completely different person than I would being with family or at work since they are my friends and therefore I don’t have to put on a fake act in order to speak with them.

Watching live theater I also saw that fashion is a big part. In our society today especially with female we love fashion. For theater fashion has to be updated for the play. If the play is set in me devil time, you can’t have the actors wearing modernized costumes. Just as in our social life we can’t go to work wearing gym clothes (unless you’re a gym teacher of course). Fashion as in our lives also in theater is a big part. I think the costumes make the play along with the actors. Seeing the actors costumes make us as audience make us feel like we are in the same time as the actors.

In today’s world video games are very popular. A video game that my brother and I used to love to play was “The Sims”. The Sims is like a virtual reality game. You can name your character who ever you want, you design your own house, you design your Sims’ personality, and also their make- up and clothes. How this game relates to theater is that you are like a director n making a script for your Sims. Unlike telling the actor where to stand or how to do something, you just click on the person or object that you want your Sim to do. Also you’re a costume designer, you click on the closet and there are numerous outfits that you can change your Sim into. There was another game that my brother and I used to play when we were young called “Def Jam Fight Club”. Def Jam was a fighting game that you would make up your own character. Unlike the Sims’ Def Jam you could change the tone of your characters voice. Like in acting, some actors change the tone, language, and etc. for their script.

Signing up for Theatre101, has taught me to respect the theater society. At first I thought I had lacked a lot of knowledge about theater, but this class has shown me that theater is always around me whether I’m at school, with my friends, and even sitting at home. I might have not realized it then but know I understand the concepts of theater.

Design the set for a play

The play I decided to design a scene for is Finding Nemo”. The scene I picked was when gill and his followers decided to initiate nemo into shark bait. During this scene of nemo’s initiation bloat, Jacques, Darla and the rest of the crew try to scare nemo by having a volcano, peach screaming like what he was about to do was going to be really scary.

I decided to re arrange a few things about this scene. For the layout of the scene I decided to have nemo follow a path the volcano. Whenever nemo reaches the volcano the path will split one side will be the wrong way and the other side will lead nemo up to the volcano. For the scenery of the stage I decided to use a light blue white blended color to show the effect that the audience and the characters are under water. I have a volcano that spits out red bubbles to act like its fire bursting under water.

I used colorful rocks to make a path for Nemo to follow up to the volcano. The rocks also will be placed around the volcano. Along the side of the path there will be four totem poles, two placed on each side of the path to have a little dramatic effect. Between each of the totem poles there will kelp leaves placed doming of over like trees. At the beginning of the path there will be coral reefs placed as an entrance for nemo to swim through.

The path will split whenever it reaches to the volcano. sea weed will be placed around the volcano the path to the right their will be a Tiki head with red beady eyes to show nemo that he went the wrong way and on the other side there will be a treasure chest to show that nemo swam to the right path. Sea weed will be hiding the two paths so nemo be able to see which path around the volcano.
